Analyzing "Poems for Some Women"

Allusion:
Sanchez stated"Bought my pretty little baby this jacket off the street.". She later sung "put on the jacket, put on the jacket" referring to the jacket as a symbol that everything is going to be ok for the daughter.

Tone:
The tone of the poem we chose was gloomy. The little girl was rejected by her mom for crack, and she raped by the men that sold her mom the crack, that’s what made the story dark and sad.

Figurative Language:
Sonia Sanchez says that the crack dealer doesn’t want to have sex with the mother any more. Sonia Sanchez uses a metaphor to describe the dealer thoughts about the mother’s vagina. Sanchez stated “your pussy to loose, you had so much traffic up your pussy, you could park a truck up there and have room for someone else.” Throughout the poem Sanchez uses hyperbole on her words. She stutters and murmurs words to sound like a crack addict in the poem, which is the main character. A cliche was also used in the poem when Sanchez says "Whats her name? Pudding Tang, ask me again and ill tell you the same." Sanchez compared the daughters eyes to dogs when she came came back from the crack house.
Theme:
We believed the theme of the poem was that, an addiction can cause you to reject the ones you love. The mother loved her daughter but her addiction for drugs was far stronger than, the love for her daughter.

Final Interpretation:
The mother takes her daughter to the crack house, where she’s been going for a while. The mother was going to have sex with the drug dealer for drugs, but the drug dealer wanted the daughter. The mother, let the drug dealer have sex with the daughter for the drugs. After taking the drugs, the mother realizes that the daughter ran away and she loved her daughter, more than how she treated her.

Chris: I feel like it is much easier to understand and get a feeling for this poem because she is reading it out loud. She reads it the way she wanted it to be read and that helps a great deal in being able to understand the poem. I also really like how she uses her voice and the way she says words to make the poem more dramatic and full of emotion.

Danyelle: I love how she reads the poem, it really gets the message across and brings it to life. I like how the videographer changed the image to a sepia tone as Sanchez reads. The poem itself, though, is so disturbing. Even more so when you think about how that could actually happen.
